Jan 26: Republic Day: Students organise various programmes in the spirit of patriotism and national integrity to honour the memory of the country’s freedom fighters, national leaders and the Indian Constitution.
April 7: World Health Day: Health awareness programmes with charts, posters, role-playing, street plays, etc centring on a theme are organised at various venues such as the Bandra Holy Family Hospital’s OPD, at Community Health Centres and in Schools.
May 6 to 12: Nurses’ Week: A week-long programme to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, patron of nurses. Events include quiz contests, poster preparation, skits, debates, sports and games, etc. The last day is marked by celebrations and a prize distribution for winners of branch-level competitions in Mumbai. This takes place at the International Nurses’ Day celebrations on May 12.
Aug 1: Opening Day: The first day of the course for the new batch of students. The principal, faculty and staff of HFINE along with students and their parents/guardians meet. An opportunity to get acquainted with each other and to discuss queries regarding rules & regulations, facilities, examinations, leave, etc.
Aug 15: Independence Day: Students organise various programmes in the spirit of patriotism and national integrity to honour the memory of the country’s freedom fighters and national leaders.
Sept 5: Onam: Student-nurses celebrate Kerala’s harvest festival. Students dress in festive attire, participate in a cultural dance called thiruvathira around Onapookalam, and enjoy special sweet dishes onasadhya and payasam.
Sept 5: Teacher’s Day: Students honour their teachers by organising various programmes and felicitating them. Teachers also participate in quiz contests and games.
Sept 5: Freshers’ Day: Freshers showcase their talents and skills to teachers, staff and senior students. Usually held a month after the course commences.
Nov: Diwali: Students celebrate Diwali with rangoli, competitions, card-making, etc.
Dec 8: Institution Day: A day of fun & laughter, sports & games. Competitions include singing, dance, tableau and Christmas carols. Students attend a prayer ceremony and partake of a special lunch and high tea.
Dec: Lamp-Lighting & Prize Distribution: A ceremonial initiation to the course, held three months after the course commences. Students, staff and faculty participate in a programme where a lamp resembling the traditional lamp of Florence Nightingale is lit. Senior nurses pass the light to the freshers. On this occasion, freshers recite Nightingale’s pledge to the public to reinforce their commitment to the profession.
Student Nurses’ Association (SNA): Every student enrolls with SNA in their first year. The association organizes programmes at the state and national levels. The SNA hosts conferences where students display posters and models on a theme. Students also maintain a diary of their special activities, which are evaluated during national-level conferences.
Awards : Meritorious Student of each year is given a cash award and a certificate.
Rolling Trophy: An appraisal of 3 months after completion of the course focuses on the best Nurse of the batch and presented with a rolling trophy.
